Clean Up Campaign – Mangrove Forest
International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem
31 July 2021
In context of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and also the Cleaning and Awareness Campaign recently launched by the Prime Minister, a clean-up campaign was organised by YYC –Yes You Can on Saturday 31 July 2021 in the mangrove area of Pointe Jerome and Pointe D’Esny, Mahebourg.
The International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is celebrated every year on 26 July as a unique opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of mangroves as a “unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem” and to promote their sustainable management, conservation and use. Mangroves are rare, spectacular and prolific ecosystems on the boundary between land and sea. These extra ordinary ecosystems contribute to the wellbeing, food security, and protection of coastal communities worldwide. They support a rich biodiversity and provide a valuable nursery habitat for fish and crustaceans. Mangroves also act as a form of natural coastal defense against storm surges, tsunamis, rising sea levels and erosion. Their soils are highly effective carbon sinks, sequestering vast amounts of carbon. Yet mangroves are disappearing three to five times faster than overall global forest losses, with serious ecological and socio-economic impacts.
YYC is dedicated to reversing the decline of mangrove forest ecosystems. To help prioritize these vital ecosystems, and minimize the impacts of climate change, we invite you to join us in our campaign. Due to the prevailing Covid-19 outbreak, a restricted number of members have been invited to participate in this clean-up session and also sanitary precautions have been respected. YYC thanks all members present for their participation in this initiative of national interest.
